Hiking in Vanoise
Probably my last hike of the season (I have an idea in mind for my last days of holidays) with a small tour in the Vanoise National Park for the ascent of the Col de Chavière starting from the refuge de l'Orgère and with a small detour to the Lac de la Partie. Without great difficulty to the lake, the ascent to the pass is more difficult and ends in a delicate scree. If you want to see the lake from the pass, take the ridge on the right until you reach the first small summit.
As in the other places I visited, the scenery is superb is particularly desert-like and lunar at the lake level and many animals are possible to observe. As soon as I arrived at the pass, a magnificent bearded vulture of an impressive size passed twice just a few metres above me. You will see a photo taken with my 24-70mm in a hurry, unfortunately the quality of the photo is not optimal. For information, this bird is a species of vulture and therefore in the category of scavengers, it feeds mainly on bones. It is also one of the largest raptors in Europe with a wingspan of between 2.60 and 2.90m in adulthood. The one I photographed seems to be a child about a year old from his plumage. To learn more about this bird, I invite you to read this article by the Ligue pour la protection des oiseaux.
By being a little attentive on the way, especially between the lake and the pass, it is possible to see in this valley the stigmas of the Second World War. In fact, you will be able to discover there the presence of some remains of shells and very numerous craters of explosions during the bombardments of Modane in September then again in November 1943 by the Allies in order to destroy the station in order to cut off the supply of German troops fighting in Italy. For more information on this period in the history of the city of Modane, you can read the article from the Dauphiné on this subject or on the website of the Savoyard Railway Equipment Preservation Association, l APMFS.
